July 1 changes to the skilled lists

It seems the times of simple answers to the question 'Is-my-occupation-on-the-list' have well and truly gone. Instead of the SOL and CSOL, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection introduced in April, two new skilled lists.

The Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) applies to s/c 189, 190, and (family sponsored) 489  visas. The Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) applies to 407, 457, 186, 190, and (state sponsored) 489 visas. Both lists are now available under the same link

For employer sponsored visas, it may no longer be enough to have an occupation on the list though. Instead, the employer must often meet additional criteria (“caveats”). A summary on 'caveat- affected' occupations is here.

On the 1st July the Department removed a number of occupations from both lists:

  • Equipment Hire Manager

  • Fleet Manager

  • Picture Framer

  • Property Manager

  • Psychotherapist

  • Real Estate Agent Principal

  • Real Estate Agent

  • Real Estate Agent Representative

  • Ship’s Engineer

  • Ship’s Master

  • Ship’s Officer

  • University Tutor

One occupation has been added to the MLTSSL

  • ICT security specialist (262112)
