Besides Partner visas there’re a wide range of other visa classes within the so called ‚Family Stream’. The most important are:

Amongst other requirements, applicants will need to have an eligible relative who also can act as a Sponsor. Your Sponsor will need to be either an Australian Citizen, a Permanent Resident or an eligilbe New Zealand Citizen.
Partner visa are usually granted in two stages. Given an application is successful a spouse of an Australian resident would initially be granted a temporary visa for a period of two years. This temporary visa grants full study and workrights. After two years DIAC checks again if the relationship still exists and the partner can then become a permanent resident. It isn't necessary to be married to be eligible for a partner visa. Generally it's also possible to meet the requirements for de-facto spouses or same sex couples.
